Accessibility explained the Star Wars way

In a very present time, in a galaxy right in front of you the Emperor and his Sith Lords and other loyal servants has ruled the Galaxy for years almost unknowingly of it’s citizens.

But not all was seduced by the Dark Side. For many years a group of Jedi Knights and their followers has done their best to spread the truth throughout the Galaxy and more and more has turned to the Light Side.

Now they’ve come to the Final Battle and their only hope is to turn the entire Galaxy against the Emperor..

Hard to see, the Dark Side is

The Galaxy we live in has been more or less ruled by the Dark Side and the Sith Lords for years, and they have done what they can to keep the power giving us software for creating websites ‘the easy way, no HTML knowledge needed, you see what you get’ etc etc.

And we, the stupid citizen of the Galaxy, have believed in the lies of the Siths and we have even been willing to pay for this “easy way out” and given the Emperor more and more power.

We have all been mislead by the Dark Side, creating our very first site in Frontpage or other site builders and WYSIWYG editors. And we have used the Dark Side’s tools without even thinking or knowing.

We are too many believing in their lies of “HTML knowledge not needed” and “simply just copy and paste this code into your website.” And they have taught us all too well that websites is all about fun things, useless stuff and looking good in their specific browser..

And we’re adding things to our site, the way they taught us: Fun at first, useless in the long run.

But most of all, the Dark Side has taught us to fear the S(F)ource.

Choose your Destiny

Well, we build our first site in the software given to us by the Dark Side, not knowing any better, and all works well until the day we receive the message that something is wrong with our site. Something, that involves taking a look at this Source, the very Source we have learned to fear and hate.

This is when you choose your site’s destiny.

The path to the Dark Side

When you get this message from a friendly soul, probably a follower of the Jedi, or a Jedi Knight him/ herself, that your site isn’t so ‘perfect’ that you have mislead to believe, you may turn to the Dark Side.

You may respond to this message with “If you don’t like my site, don’t visit it”. You may respond to it by adding av ‘Best viewed in..” or “This site require..” messages on your website.

This is the path to the Dark Side. The will of not wanting to care about what your visitors have to say about your site, - or take a peak on you source and figure out what went wrong is the path to Dark Side.

Anyone who knows Star Wars, would also know the elignment of the the Sith Lords, the Dark Jedis; It’s “me, me, me and if there’s something left, it’s in for me”.

By not caring about you visitors experince of your site, by forcing people to have the same kind of software as yourself to view you website, you’ll soon become a servant of the Dark Side. The Dark Side is the easy way out.

The path to the Light Side

Or you may look into the Source, you may respond to the message by asking “Do you know how I can fix it?”.

The path to light side involves the search for knowledge; the understanding of how your website work and figure out how to fix any errors.

The path to the light side is careing about your visitors experience of your site, and make it at good place for everyone.

We all know that the path to the Light Side isn’t easy. There will always be times when you wnat to choose the easy way out, there will always be times when you only want to care about yourself..

Don’t underestimate the power of the F(S)ource

The power of your site lies in the Source, and in this Galaxy everyone are able to use it. And you can use the source for good or bad.

You may use the source to follow the Dark Side and create a site that looks okay in your browser, on your computer and ignore anyone’s objections. It’s your website, right?

Or your may use the source to follow the Light Side; searching knowledge on how to improve your site, how to follow any standards and codes of the Jedi Masters.

It’s the source that tells everyone what path you have chosen. Do you design for the old times when the Sith Lords ruled, or the future; the comming of the Jedi?

I am your father(, Luke)

“But everyone else is doing it like this!” - Yes, that’s the very power of the Dark Side, spreading their propganda all over the Galaxy.

But just like Luke you have the power to chose another destiny for your site. You don’t have to fall to the Dark Side, even if others have done that before you.

The choice is yours:

So what you want to be? A Sith Lord or a Jedi Master?

PS. You may stop humming on the Star Wars score now…
