Comment spam explained the Lord of the Rings way

~ Or why you need to moderate your comments ~

In a place on the web there was blog. It wasn’t an ordinary blog, it was a personal blog, which meant it was cosy*

When you get your very first blog and start blogging you welcome every comment you get, and in your first days of blogging it’s all cosy, nice and a bit like the Shire where everybody is friends.

But one day you get a comment that might look innocent, just like the One Ring: “Hey, great post! This was just the information I was looking for.”

You are still naive, and might let the comment stay on your site, but then one day a great Wizard comes along and he tells you to through the Ring into the flames (edit comment) and when you take it out you’ll see carvings inside it:

“If you don’t delete this comment, your blog will soon be swarmed by orcs!” the wizard will tell you. “The Enemy already knows its here.”

And before you know it the Spam(Ring)wraiths comes along: Cheap Viagra, Online Casino, Free Porn and Sexy Girls (not all of the names of the nine SpamWraiths are known). And they make your blog an unsafe place to be, scaring away your normal visitors and taking the fun out of blogging.

“The spam (Ring) must be destroyed”

Your first steps to make your blog a good place again would be to held all comments in moderation cue, but in the long run, and especially if you get a lot of spam comments this will be quite tiring, so it might be an idea go looking for some good Anti-Spam fighters, a good anti-spam plugin for your blog.

Unfortunately we don’t have any Mount Doom in the Middle Earth of blogging, there isn’t any plugin or precaution you can do that will destroy the spam, but there are several great fighters that keeps the Enemy away from your blog: Aragorn son of Askimet, Gimli son of Bad Behaviour and Legolas Spam Karma to mention a few.

Just pick the fighter that works for you, or pick them all; they’ve all sworn to protect you against the Enemy.

Just remember: the Enemy is everywhere, and just like Frodo you have to do some fighting on your own.

If you do nothing your blog will be swarming orcs and you’ll become Saruman the manycolored.
